The system of civil registration of Deaths was introduced to Ireland in 1864. If your ancestor died during the period 1864 forward it will thus be possible to search for their Civil Death record.
A Civil Death record provides the following details in relation to the deceased:
Irish civil death records can be found in the General Register Office (GRO) which is located in Dublin. An annual index is available in the GRO which allows us to search for a particular death record on the basis of information supplied by you. The index includes the name and age of each individual dying and the District in which the death occurred. Once a relevant entry has been located in the index a copy of the full death record can be taken up in the GRO.
The information contained in a death record provides a lot of assistance in searching for other records pertaining to the deceased. The age at death for example can help in narrowing the search for a birth record.
Further details on the death itself can be gained through a search of newspaper death notices for the weeks following the date of death shown in the record. These notices often list names of other family members and tend to include the name of the cemetery to which the deceased’s funeral proceeded (which can facilitate a grave search). In the years following the death, newspaper Anniversary notices often appear which give yet more information on family relationships.
A civil death record can also assist in searching for Will records. Wills are a good source of information on family relationships, property holdings etc.
